Blown Glass on Gamal Root Base
The Gamal Tree grows all over the Islands of Indonesia. While the main uses of the Gamal Tree are for feeding the goats and buffalo in that region, a way to recycle the root sections is to make the base of hand-blown glass vessels. Each root base is cut, cleaned and kiln dried. Then an Indonesian Artisan hand blows and fires a glass vessel to perfectly form onto each base. The "fired" glass takes the unique shape of the root base and becomes one. The glass is then dipped into water to cool and solidfy its shape. We purchase these Gamal Roots from the farmers in the area to help them economically.
